A bridge to the future (soon)

Metro do Porto has just launched the public tender for the design of a new bridge over the Douro River. This bridge, which will be part of the second line to Vila Nova de Gaia, represents an investment of 50 million euros. After the ideas contest and the choice of the designer, the work will be carried out between 2023 and 2026, simultaneously with the new line.

The new bridge will connect Campo Alegre, in Porto, to Candal, in Gaia, about 500 meters to the east of Ponte da Arrábida. It represents a mandatory part of a new Metro line that will connect Casa da Música and Santo Ovídio, passing through Devesas station, where it will interface with trains. Both the bridge and the line are included in the RRP (Recovery and Resilience Plan) and must be completed by 2026.

Metro do Porto’s objective is to attract the best bridge designers in the world for this international challenge. In fact, the competition jury is composed of eleven personalities, technicians and specialists who bring together various sensitivities and specialties, representing not only the Metro, but also the Porto and Gaia city halls, the Order of Architects and the Order of Engineers.
